The owners of a 1960’s single-story ranch house wanted a fresh take on their out-dated, well-worn Montecito residence. Hailing from Toronto Canada, the couple felt at ease in urban, loft-like spaces and looked to create a pared-down structure for their home.
The scope of the work included an extensive demolition of the existing 3,800 square foot home, following a complete interior/exterior remodel.
Young Construction and DesignArc re-configured the extant floor plan beneath the existing roof, transforming it into a mid-century modern home. The modernized plans connected all spaces to the outdoors making the home translucent and vivid with natural lighting.
Continuous ridge skylights bring natural illumination into the center of the house, and work to further erase the
boundary between inside and out.
What was once a secluded and dim branch of the home is now a family room with large pocketing sliding glass doors on either side, creating a radiant space.
The minimalist palette consists of essentially three materials: smooth-troweled plaster, cement panels and fumed-oak floors.
With a color scheme of soft white and gray undertones, the space is a gentle backdrop to the vibrant relationship the owners enjoy with the outdoors and Santa Barbara’s Mediterranean climate.
The remodel was not limited to the building itself. The property’s one acre grounds where given a facelift with all new landscaping and a modernized pool. The overall outcome was nothing short of spectacular.
