The home is a charming hacienda with beautiful grounds surrounding it but it had a few features that needed updating. Designer Micholyn Brown’s goal was to soften it and make it feel like a modern Spanish cottage.
The kitchen was completely redone using a modern Spanish tile as well as sleek open shelving and rustic, yet modern leather bar stools.
“We updated all the light fixtures to create a lighter silhouette rather than the typical heavy Spanish Iron,” Brown comments. “The fireplace was re-plastered in a more simple style, eliminating a lot of unnecessary details.”
The upholstered furnishings added to the uncluttered, simple casualness of the house.
The family room was built around the colors of a lovely colorful contemporary landscape that belonged to the clients. It is comfortable, restful and relaxing with large scale furnishings in the intense colors of the painting yet blends seamlessly with the rest of the house that is accented in the same colors.
A gracefully designed fireplace in the arbor-covered patio provides an intimate setting for outdoor entertaining.
The outdoor landscaping was organized and simplified using succulents, cactus and lavenders to coordinate with the modern rustic feel of the house. Citrus trees, olives trees and oaks surround the property.
Micholyn Brown is often involved in coordinating appropriate landscaping and outdoor garden rooms for her design projects. She takes pride in bringing all elements of design together to enable a project to reach its full potential.
