Santa Barbara's guide to what's new and undiscovered for home and garden, entertaining, style and travel. The resource guide below lists local happenings, boutique finds, travel destinations, food artisans and design professionals.

Santa Barbara Artist Erika Marie Carter

Erika’s inspiration always starts with her external surroundings, her travels to Central Mexico have greatly influenced her work over the past 12 years. While Erika’s travels will almost always be apparent in her artwork, she also finds inspiration in her own backyard. The rich history of Green House Studios, located in the Funk Zone, has found its way into to Erika’s paintings over the last year.

Several trips to Europe ignited a shift in her work. Old world textiles, wall paper, and sculpture found within the cities of Paris, Versailles, Florence, and Rome influenced Erika’s recent work. Decorative stencils and resins are the tools used to create a new series of paintings.  A crossover and combination of new and old surroundings, experiences, and working techniques is what excites and inspires Erika to make paintings.

Previously, Erika was the director and founder of The Project Fine Art Zone, a collaborative gallery not-for profit art gallery owned and operated by nine Santa Barbara based artists. The gallery benefited Girls Inc. of greater Santa Barbara by donating 20% of all sales. Before that, Erika owned Studio Three East, a contemporary gallery exhibiting local artists, new and established.

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Erika Carter continues to reside in her home town and lives and works in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone. In 2013 Erika established Green House Studios, a working studio that she shares with three of her peers.

MARY’S FIG AND FLOCK, 5′ X 7′,  ACRYLIC ON BIRCH PANEL

Mary Castagnolia Acquistapace lived for more than 70 years at what is now known as Green House Studios. “Mary is part of my work now, I feel like I’m a lucky guest in her home and garden. Her presence is undeniable and it feels instinctual to paint my impression of Mary and the bountiful fruit trees and birds in her yard”.

Erika’s work is also available at Sollano 16 in Miguel De Allende, Mexico and ustairs at Pierre Lafond, Montecito, CA.
