Paul Hendershot Design Garden Elements

Paul Hendershot Design, a landscape company based in Ojai, CA, works closely with the client in creating gardens that emphasize the classic approach to landscape design. Great care is taken to unite the architecture of the home with that of the property and expanded views.

Hendershot shares some valuable garden design elements used in several of his projects.

Southern Style…When gazing out the windows or walking about the grounds, the lush, green elements of a southern garden are recreated on this California property.

Red brick patios contrast between pea gravel pathways that are lined with boxwood.

Oak trees give plenty of shade to protect the home owners from great amounts of sun exposure on hot days. The warm to hot climate and rainy seasons are ideal conditions for grapes to thrive in,  so Hendershot included a grape vineyard in the front and a grape arbor in the back of the property.

French Vegetable Garden…Santa Barbara’s weather is very similar to the South of France, which makes it an ideal place for a French-style garden. A custom shed and adjacent composting area adds to the organic gardening experience.

Fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, raspberries, lettuce, tomatoes and strawberries are harvested throughout the year.

The beauty of the raised stone vegetable beds is that it eliminates the amount of bending while gardening. Essential herbs like rosemary and lavender are readily available to complete the French culinary experience.

Patios and Levels

“When we first arrived at the location we found a large piece of land that was mostly sloped,” Hendershot comments. “We designed a plan that connected the different areas using patios and level areas. “As you are walking from the patios to the levels there are handcrafted stone steps to lead the way.  The stone was reclaimed from the ground, creating a rustic, natural look.

The patios and levels flow in such a way that they connect the main house to everything else on the property.
