Santa Barbara's guide to what's new and undiscovered for home and garden, entertaining, style and travel. The resource guide below lists local happenings, boutique finds, travel destinations, food artisans and design professionals.

Patricia Houghton Clarke Architectural Photography

Award-winning photographer Patricia Houghton Clarke specializes in structures of all kinds. Whether it is the human form or a built environment, she seeks to create sensitive, artful images which bring forth the essence of her subject and the desires of her client.

Patricia developed her “artist’s eye” through years of international travel, painting, music, writing, and casual photography. Her images are a fusion of her fascination with shape, light and color and her love of everyday life, both near and far.  Among others, her work is influenced by Rembrandt’s mastery of chiaroscuro, Van Gogh, Cezanne and Georgia O’Keefe’s use of color and shape, the Surrealist expression of basic human instinct, and the work of many photographers, particularly Andre Kertesz, Graciela Iturbide, Jesse Alexander and Sebastiao Salgado.

With an extensive background in the design and building field, she is especially interested in photographing local buildings and gardens. In addition to other notable local projects (the Granada Theater restoration; Schott House gardens), Patricia loves to wander the streets of Santa Barbara and photograph her hometown with the eyes of a traveler.

Patricia teamed up with Michael De Rose to photograph one of his Montecito villa and garden designs, using her custom medium-format film technique to bring forth the personality and soul of the home and garden.

“In his residential work in Montecito – the Isola Bella Gatehouse (1986-87) and Hahn House (1989) – Michael De Rose has looked to rural Italian rather than Iberian houses as his point of departure. De Rose…(has) worked to revitalize the Hispanic/Mediterranean as a creative living tradition…”
David Gebhard, “The Romance is Back”

Patricia is available to work with local architects, designers, builders and clients to create one-of-a-kind images that will withstand the test of time.

Completely comfortable on a job site, she can become involved with a project at any point to document all stages of construction. She also offers design services for creating beautiful coffee table books (hardcover or e-books) that would be an exciting addition to any portfolio, as well as a wonderful memento for any proud homeowner.

Client’s comments

“Patricia brings an awareness and aesthetic from her art photography to the realm of real estate photography. She persistently strives to produce high quality work reflecting not only the property but the agent’s and owner’s desired emphasis.” Errol Jahnke

“Most photographers are lacking in some crucial area, but Patty has it all covered. She’s got a great eye for composition and a wealth of world travel experience plus the personality to interact and engage the subject in a way that respectfully and authentically captures their character. Patty also has the unique ability to create powerfully timeless images with analog technology while maintaining an aptitude for digital methods. Most importantly, she’s down to earth and a pleasure to work with.”
Sean Kelley, Creative Director, Shindy Media / Epiphany Marketing

“I have worked with Patricia on a number of projects at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara and engaged her to photograph my wedding. She is very professional, personable, punctual and works extremely well with others. But her greatest contribution is her ability to ‘feel’ the event and get countless perfect shots. She completely, and accurately, captured our wedding, our happiness and the sheer joy of the occasion.”  David Asbell
