Helene Henderson runs a two acre organic farm at her Malibu home, and to promote the artisanal food movement, she started to organize dinner parties, cooking with seasonal ingredients from her property. Her al fresco dinners took off, and now she’s hosting sold out pop-up meals at various Malibu properties and has recently opened a Malibu Farm pop-up cafe on the Malibu Pier.
Henderson, a chef and cookbook author and talented interior designer Vanessa Alexander teamed up to design a beachy/natural setting with used weathered wood tables and benches, industrial seats, and large picture windows and outdoor seating.
Malibu Farm Pier Cafe is serving breakfast and lunch, and hopefully will be open for dinner in the near future. The evolving menu is an interesting mix of healthy dishes with ingredients from local purveyors, like kale Caesar salad, Brussels sprouts pizza and multigrain pancakes with fresh fruit.
After six months, Henderson plans to see how the pop-up is received. If all goes well, Malibu Farm could eventually become a permanent fixture at The Pier. The Pier Cafe is open Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 3pm. Special events are also being held on the pier, so be sure to visit the website to learn about upcoming happenings.
