The1/2-acre garden of a newly remodeled home in the Santa Barbara foothills was created to extend the family’s living space into a series of outdoor spaces, designed to entertain, nourish and calm.
After renovations, the landscape had been demolished and the family was desperate to get out of the dust and enjoy their garden again. Careful stitching together of the materials found on site and a few key elements (fire pit, cedar hot tub and veggie bins) kept costs to a minimum, while satisfying each desired use.
The family wanted a place that supported quality time together – cooking, eating, gardening, swimming, ghost tales and marshmallows around the fire.
Natural stonework and lush, drought tolerant, Mediterranean plantings allow the family to feel like they enter another world as they walk through the archway.
The existing hardscape and entryway are softened by a vibrant palette. Espaliered figs along the driveway retaining wall soften the wall and provide snacking for the family and the birds.
The result is a garden that is a clear expression of how the family sees themselves living, entertaining, relaxing, swimming and gardening within a tranquil, low maintenance setting.
