Santa Barbara's guide to what's new and undiscovered for home and garden, entertaining, style and travel. The resource guide below lists local happenings, boutique finds, travel destinations, food artisans and design professionals.

DesignARC Hope Ranch Mediterranean

Returning from the East Coast, the owners of this Hope Ranch home came to California with the desire to build a home that blended into Santa Barbara’s Mediterranean environment. They envisioned a house with a traditional exterior, but whose interiors were spare and sleek, reminiscent of a modern, New York loft. Leonard Unander Associates was the general contractor.

The final product resulted in a four-bedroom home that occupies a south-facing view lot in Hope Ranch, a suburb of Santa Barbara characterized by narrow winding roads, horse paths and native oak trees.  The entrance to the property, due east, features a measured motor court with an elegant fountain and simple planning. The otherwise chaste entry boasts an exotic and intricate custom wrought iron entrance door.

Once inside, the spaces are an unexpected contrast of modern sensibilities and open minimalism. This home’s romantic shell reveals no secrets about its rational interior.

The foyer opens into a single great room, encompassing the living, dining, and kitchen activities. Large, pocket mahogany sliding doors further expand the living space, linking the living room to the pool terrace with its infinity edge reaching out to the distant Los Padres Mountains.

Rustic, wide-plank grey hickory floors, and rough-hewn natural wood ceiling beams provide contrast to the all-white interior and modern architectural features.

The DesignArc philosophy…
“We believe architecture, at its core, is a dialogue. It is a building or space that is telling you something, making you feel a certain way or reacting to a specific human need. We celebrate and nurture dialogue between art and science, structure and emotion, material and context, environment and shelter, and between ourselves and our clients.”
