This Malibu home, designed by noted architect Barry Berkus, covers just over 6,000 square feet, and is located on a one acre lot. The entry into the home is magnificent, with the 10 ft. high pair of glass entry doors inviting one into the home, providing immediate views of the pool and Pacific Ocean beyond.
“It was my great pleasure to have been the interior designer for this Malibu ocean view residence,” states Santa Barbara based interior designer Dana Berkus. “My Father in Law, Barry Berkus, conceived the overall design and floor plan of the sprawling ranch house estate with spectacular ocean views.” Michael Manzo was the Project Architect.
The clients are a young couple from the Los Angeles area. The husband is an avid surfer. “My starting point for the general color pallet was to work with the ocean color tones that change throughout the day.” Berkus comments. Honed sea grass tile was used throughout the majority of the interior floor spaces. Flamed sea grass tile was used for the exterior pavers, continuing the color and character outside.
After delineating the spaces throughout the home, Berkus was able to design all of the cabinetry layouts. For consistency, the wood type was kept at two species, Walnut and Bamboo. The only changes in that rule was the use of solid teak for the pool bath and white cabinets in the laundry area. The furniture selected throughout the project came from multiple sources. Upon entering the home, the 10′ natural wood dining table is centered on the entry doors
Left of the dining table is the Living Room. The entertainment center is is surrounded by ledge stone punctuated by the fireplace opening, the television niche and the walnut built-in cabinets. A bar is located on the wall adjacent to the living area. The furniture is upholstered with a mix of leather frames and chenille cushions, accented by a Christopher Farr area rug, integrating red, orange and grey into the palette.
A pair of swivel chairs lend character with a multi-color zigzag pattern. A slab cut from the trunk of a large tree acts as the coffee table.
The Kitchen Island and cook area located to the right, showcase Bamboo cabinets that are accented by “Super White” Pental Quartz. The full height back splashes are clad with honed blue glass tile. Upholstered Bertoia counter stools invite guests to relax while food preparations are being made.
Entering the Master Bedroom Suite, the floor changes from the stone tile over to a wide plank oak floor. The color scheme is in neutral tones, establishing a peaceful space. The silver Travertine brings additional character into the room.
Multiple tones of blue tile mixed with sand tones and teal, jade green marble in the Master Bathroom and silver Travertine on the fireplace, complete the walls of the bedrooms and baths.
The floor material brings warmth and character to the vaulted ceiling above, accented by the three-tier Fortuny pendant.
The Powder Bath was completed with carved green soapstone with a floating thick slab of sand toned limestone. The surrounding walls were paneled with wire brushed oak paneling, adding warmth to the small space.
“The finished home feels consistent and complete. There are no shocking surprises, just subtle changes to keep one interested and content,” Dana Berkus comments.
