Bakelite Collection at Peregrine Galleries

Peregrine Galleries owner Marlene Vitanza buys and sells the finest vintage Bakelite bracelets, necklaces and pins that are distinctive and of the highest quality. Stop by the Montecito store and peruse the collection of this remarkable line of vintage jewelry.

Leo Baekeland was born in Ghent, Belgium, His invention of Bakelite, an inexpensive, nonflammable, versatile, and popular plastic, marked the beginning of the modern plastics industry. He was looking for a material to be used to insulate wire and he mixed carbonic acid and formaldehyde to form the first plastic.

He founded the General Bakelite Corporation and introduced Bakelite to the general public in 1909 at a chemical conference. The company was sold to Union Carbide in 1939.

Bakelite was used to manufacture a variety of items, including telephone and auto parts, kitchenware, and finally costume jewelry. In the 30’s, American women embraced the look of Bakelite’s colors and flamboyant designs.

Bakelite became popular during the depression, when women couldn’t afford fine jewelry. It was molded, carved, inlaid and embellished by many well-known designers. Mix-and-match bangles of varying widths were popular, as well as amusing pins and necklaces designed using a variety of geometric shapes.

Bakelite’s whimsical style is often what attracts collectors, but what makes the jewelry so appealing is the wide selection of colors…vibrant reds, jewel-toned greens, warm browns and rich golds, contrasting blacks and deep maroons. Whether you’re an avid collector or you’re just looking for one piece to define your fall outfit, Bakelite jewelry is the ideal way to let your personal style shine.

Peregrine Galleries is known for carrying the finest jewelry by Chanel, Georg Jenson, Bakelite jewelry from the 1930′s to 1950′s, Navajo and Zuni turquoise jewelry and more.
