This new custom home embodies the phrase, “from ashes to opportunity”. The owners’ goal, after losing their Santa Barbara home to wildfires, was to build a new one to better reflect their design aesthetic and lifestyle. The result is a stunning example of modern indoor-outdoor living with a Pacific Rim influence.
Vaulted ceilings in the entry and living room, along with numerous floor to ceiling, retracting glass doors throughout the home, create a feeling of openness and provide spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.
Elegant, earthy finishes include the Santos mahogany floors and ceilings in every room and solid mahogany cabinets in the kitchen. Four men worked eight months to install the Egyptian limestone marble found in the entry, on both interior and exterior walls, the fireplaces, exterior columns throughout the master bathroom, and the pool deck.
Seamless connections between interior and exterior spaces abound, including a large pocket window which opens the kitchen
to the outdoor BBQ area.
A unique element contributed by the owner is a “lazy river” leading from the infinity pool, around the house, and ending adjacent to a Koi pond, surrounded by lush tropical landscape, and separating the main house from the guest wing. Not only are these water features aesthetic and peaceful, they cool warm mountain breezes before they enter the home, providing natural air conditioning.
Planning was the key to the success of this project. The building team included not only the architect Richard Redmond (with Edwards Pitman Architects) and builder Allen Construction, but also the owners, who were integrally involved with both the planning and implementation phases. Their approach to rebuilding: “We were only going to build a house once in our lives and we wanted to get it right. We didn’t want to compromise on design or quality.”
